Why and How I did this websiteWhy I decided to build this websiteI was not looking to build a website. I stumbled upon it. My student Sam inspired me unknowingly during a consulting session with me. Sam was enthusiastic about starting a new venture with his brother. He just purchased a software that I 'recommended' and will use it to start his web-based business. I was stunned. I did not and would not recommend or endorse any software in class!? (I still do not endorse softwares in my classes, especially non-freewares.) Sam told me that he picked up a link from one of the weekly readings I gave the class. He followed the link (thinking that I must have vetted it, which I had) and purchased the software. I was worried. I remembered following that link as well: it looked interesting but I certainly did not think any of my students should buy it. I believed there were cheaper or even free software out there for my students. I frowned. Sam did not frown. In fact, he was very optimistic that he would build a business. He was following the action guide and in Day 3. Since the action guide is free, I told Sam to send me the link so that I can take a look. I followed the audio and video presentations to audit what this tool offers. I'd better know what I 'recommended' my students. After following this guide for 3 days, I was motivated to try it. I wanted to build a business that runs from home, too. Since I am teaching entrepreneurship, I should come out of my retirement and a start business as a case study while still investing, lecturing and raising my kids. The first thing I wanted to do is a site about bringing up children extraordinarily. Afterall, as a mother of 5, I thought I could be quite an authority. Besides, my kids are really extraordinary (to me, at least). My kids are reasonably successful in academic, sports and performance arts. Certainly, many parents would want to know how to nurture and help ordinary kids like mine do extraordinary things. Upon researching and using the brainstorming tool, I realized I am still happier talking about entrepreneurship. So, I did this website that discusses entrepreneurship issues. For me, it is not about making lots of money out of this site. I wanted to deal with issues close to my heart, and to support my classroom lectures. However, if there are monetization opportunities, I will seize them, and only if these benefit my readers. How I built this siteI started off using simple website building tools. It gave me the freedom to focus on the contents without deploying some of my very rusty programming skills or worrying about technicalities of the site. I have not programmed seriously for almost two decades now. In 2 weeks, I learned that I have not bought into a web building tool. I have bought into a marketing machine! I was thrown into an environment where everyone is helping everyone to earn money on the web happily! I was stunned, in this environment, you have no choice but to learn how to monetize on the internet. This marketing machine is a powerful tool. I have learnt a lot from just purchasing this. I continued to use the support and tools available from other users. My website, was built tapping solely on the resources from this support structure. I did not need any programming skill. I have 5 very special kids and
hundreds of very
enthusiastic students. Hence, I
spend a lot of time at home and at work. The only way to do a
website is to use the support of a group to cut short the learning
curve.
Making money? Lots of people did. You can read
about them here. What I'd say to new folks who want to build an online businessHm...if you are already competent and conversant on the Internet and know how to generate thousands of visitors to your website everyday, just look for a very good free web building tools like Joomla. Google has one, so does Yahoo. If you are less than an expert, and are looking for a good idea and generate a good web business, then try this company's software, methodology and support. It will help you earn money and understand how the whole web business works. As a lecturer, researcher and implementor in this arena, I don't really believe in reinventing the wheel. If someone else has a great product, why not use it. Hear what others say... Learn about the Web Business!
